The history of water fountains

The Egyptians are credited with use of the first indoor water fountains within the walls of there homes. The Persians and Assyrians built rectangular formal gardens with gravity fed fountains. They were shaded by trees and irrigated by pools.

In ancient Greece water fountains were built above springs thought to have magical powers. They also added statues of Greek Gods and Goddesses to the flowing fountain waters.

Copying Greek designs the Romans built hundreds of outdoor water fountains in Rome . The Roman populace enjoyed gardens and fountains attached to public baths. Some of the most beautiful water fountains were built in Europe during the Baroque and Renaissance periods. Pumping systems forced water to shoot out of the fountains in powerful jets.

During the 1600’s and 1700’s many famous water fountains were built. The most notable fountains are the fountain of the four rivers, and the Trevi fountain. Also the palace of Versailles near Paris is very well known. Here the many fountains that imitated classical designs were built in public squares, city parks, and private estates during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

Starting in the 1960’s US landscape architects introduce new ideas into water fountain design.

Today, architects use computers to control water flow and lights in public fountains. These fountains are as beautiful as any in the past.

Why Wrought Iron?

Outdoor garden and yard decorating is much easier with wrought iron. An entire garden can be set up using items made of it. These include benches, plant stands, fences, and arbors.

Gardens enclosed by wrought iron fences are classic and can add a Gothic feel to a garden display. Add a matching gate and it takes on a whole new dimension. Allow vine plants to grow on the fence and gate. Better yet put up an arbor instead of the gate and allow the vines to curl up and over the heads of visitors.

Wrought iron benches are another interesting addition. There are mini - benches for flower pots and planters and full size for visitors to sit on.

All in all wrought iron is an excellent material to use in your gardens with a wide variety of items to choose from. Try it and you might like it.
